The Japan Amateur Radio Industries Association (JAIA)
About the SM-J1
The SM-J1 features dual dynamic microphone elements, delivering superior audio quality with excellent frequency response and ensuring clear, rich audio. The dual-element design also minimizes the impact of strong low-frequency air pressure, so you can speak naturally without worrying about breath noise and plosives even in close-mic use. It has a directional pattern switch for versatile operating environments. Unidirectional mode captures front-facing audio while reducing off-axis background noise, while omnidirectional mode maintains a consistent frequency response at any mic distance, making it particularly effective for DX contacts and pileups. The microphone is detachable from the stand and mounts on a third-party boom arm with a standard 5/8 inch thread. Using a boom arm also reduces the transmission of desk vibrations to the microphone. It also supports a footswitch connection for hands-free PTT operation. Free your hands from the radio and keyboard—ideal for contests where you can concentrate on Search and Pounce and logging for more efficient operating.

Background
2021 marked the 50th anniversary of JAIA, a milestone that prompted the association to look ahead. With a shared commitment to advancing the amateur radio industry, JAIA member manufacturers launched a new initiative: developing a common accessory that enables cross-brand compatibility across the ecosystem for the first time. The timing carries added significance. 2027 marks the 100th anniversary of amateur radio in Japan, and the first product to be released by JAIA manufacturers — a fitting debut for a landmark year.
The voice of the amateur radio community itself also drove the initiative. For years, ham operators have been calling for high-quality microphone options. That demand, combined with JAIA's industry-wide effort, brought this product to life. By releasing a common accessory that works seamlessly across products from JAIA manufacturers, the aim is to broaden user choice and contribute to the continued growth and vitality of the amateur radio community.
According to JAIA research as of August 2026.
