What is Satellite PTT?
Satellite PTT is a transceiver using the Iridium® satellite network as a backup communication system when terrestrial networks are unavailable. Satellite PTT combines the ease of use of conventional land mobile radio with the global coverage of satellite communication, while eliminating the inefficiency of one-to-one satellite phone calls.
Why Satellite PTT?
How Communication Systems Perform Differently During Disasters Differently
Satellite PTT provides instant push-to-talk communication that works globally — even in remote locations or when all ground infrastructure has been destroyed.
System Comparison
| System | What You Use It For | Disaster Resilience | Why? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Satellite PTT Radio | Emergency backup communication | ✓✓ Extremely High | Independent of ground infrastructure. Functions even when everything on the ground fails. |
| Land Mobile Radio (PMR/LMR) |
Local team coordination | ✓✓ Very High | Dedicated infrastructure. Runs on batteries. No commercial network dependency. |
| IP Radio | Wide-area team coordination | ✓ Moderate | Requires functioning internet/cellular network. |
| Cellular Phone | Everyday calls and high-speed data | ✗ Low | Cell towers need power and are vulnerable to damage. Networks become congested during emergencies. |

- What about communication fees?
- Communication fees are typically charged at a flat rate through a monthly plan, and there are no additional call charges.* Communication fees differ, depending on the coverage area and the number of Satellite PTT radios.*
Depending on the country or area, a flat charge plan may not apply, or the service may not be available.

- How do I assign a coverage area?
- The coverage area can be split into different coverage regions, using circles, squares, and rectangles. For example, you can assign coverage areas to Tokyo, New York and London.

- Can the Satellite PTT radios make phone calls?
- No, the Satellite PTT radio is PTT (Push-To-Talk) use only. Using the optional VE-PG4* RoIP gateway, the Satellite PTT radio will be able to communicate with other networks.
The optional OPC-2412 connection cable is required to connect to the VE-PG4.
